The Flamingos’ industrious run at the U-17 World Cup in India came to end at the Pandit
Jawaharlal Neruda stadium to a highly dogged Colombia.

The Nigerian team (Flamingos) had a shaky start to the tournament losing their first match to Germany, before finding their groove against New Zealand and Chile, securing a Quarter Final meeting with the United States of America (U.S.A).

History Made

Bankole Olowookere’s side made history in India, as they clinched a Semi-Final meeting with Colombia as they
dispatched the USA on penalties in the Quarter Final.

In previous years a quarter-final ticket was the biggest bite the nation ever got at the tourney. A Semi-Final finish is highly exceptional.

Age-grade competitions such as these are put in place to encourage and promote education and football among youths.
The Nigerian squad coached by Olowookore is exceptionally gifted. They must be groomed and monitored because they are the future of the Super Falcons.

Flamingos Stars: Comfort Folorunsho

The Delta Queens’ defender Comfort Folorunsho was a stone wall at the back for the Flamingos. Although she had a terrible game against Germany, she was able to garner her composure as the tournament developed.

Opeyemi Ajakaye

The striker would have hoped to score more goals that would have helped her team lift the trophy. Although she did not score as many goals as in the qualifiers, her “Man of the Match” awards against New Zealand and Chile, painted a detailed picture of her impact on the squad.

Amina Bello

A skilful, fast and tormentor in chief of Bankole’s Flamingos is definitely the future of the Super Falcons.
Also, Bello paired Opeyemi Ajakaye in attack and was a threat throughout the tournament with her footwork, passes, and shots.

Usani is another treasure, her upbeat movements off and on the ball always ensured the attackers had options. Definitely, a miracle that is destined for the national team in the coming future.

Tumininu Adeshina

Adeshina’s exploits were on the left flank of the field and it was indeed a beauty to behold. The Naija Ratel defender’s telepathic understanding with Ajakaye and Bello ensure the Flamingoes looked menacing whenever they pushed an attack.
