Insurance Second Attempt At Unbeaten Run Ends In Fed Cup Win

Bendel Insurance won the Nigerian Federations Cup without losing or conceding a goal in all five matches.

A late first-half penalty kick converted by Bendel Insurance’s prolific striker, Imade Osarenkhoe after a suspected handball incident gave the team the only goal of the game.

The win ensured Insurance went through the Federation Cup campaign without conceding a goal in five games.

The Benin Arsenal’s first attempt at going unbeaten ended after 21 matches in the NPFL playoffs, but while that unbeaten run ended, they were building another in the Federation Cup.

The team did not lose a game in the regular season, winning eight and drawing 10 games.

A 1-0 loss to Rivers United in the NPFL playoff was their first defeat in the season before losing to Remo Stars to make it just two losses in the league.

On the road to the 2023 Federation Cup final, Insurance FC defeated ABS of Ilorin1-0; Ahudiya FC of Abia 1-0, Heartland FC of Owerri 1-0 and Sunshine Stars with the same 1-0 goal margin before their 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Warri Wolves after a goalless draw in the Semifinals in Lagos.

The Rangers/Insurance FA Cup Trilogy Is Complete

The meeting at the Stephen Keshi stadium was the third in the final of the Federation Cup, with both teams meeting earlier in 1978 and 1981.
In 1978, Rangers lost 3-0, with Peter Egharevba scoring the first goal from a long-range free-kick.
They got their revenge in 1981, also at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. Okuchukwu Obiora and Ifeanyi Onyedika, a member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning Green Eagles, scored to hand the ‘Benin Arsenal a 2-0 defeat and returned the trophy to Enugu.
Insurance’s only win in the competition previously was in 1972, when they needed a replay to defeat Sam Garba Okoye-inspired Mighty Jets to claim the title.
Federations Cup winners Bendel Insurance went home with the sum of 15 million naira (Fifteen Million Naira Only). In comparison, Rangers International got the sum of Seven Million and Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only.
Also, the victory means they will participate in the CAF Confederations Cup as Nigeria’s second representative, alongside Rivers United.
