Ogunmodede Targets Early Preparations For CHAN Tournament

Super Eagles B stand-in coach Daniel Ogunmodede is eager to begin preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship tournament, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from February 1 to 28, 2025.

Nigeria secured their spot in their the tournament on Saturday, defeating Ghana 3-1 in the second leg of the final qualifying fixture at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Ogunmodede, who worked alongside Rangers International counterpart Fidelis Ilechukwu to assemble the team, expressed his desire to replicate the successful preparation strategy used for the qualifiers.

“We had early preparations for the qualifiers with three phases of camping. The last phase started four weeks ago in Ikenne, and that really helped us. Hopefully, we will have the same preparation for the CHAN proper,” Ogunmodede said after the game.

The Remo Stars coach emphasized the importance of building on the team’s strengths while addressing weaknesses. “Obviously, there is little or nothing that will change because these boys have really proved themselves. We can only assess the videos, identify our weaknesses, and work on them.”

Ogunmodede had previously highlighted the significance of qualifying for the tournament, stating, “Qualification would be monumental. It offers a platform to showcase local talent, raise the profile of the domestic league, and inspire the next generation of footballers.”

Nigeria will be making their first appearance at the CHAN in six years, having last participated in 2018. The team has never won the tournament, finishing third in 2014 and losing the final to Morocco in 2018.
