Calvin Bassey Out, Nwaiwu in; the switch that may have added the final puzzle to what Nigerians should expect of a future Super Eagles central defense as coach Eric Chelle gets the complete materials to build a wall reminiscent of warriors past.
Ahead of two international friendly matches against Iran and Jordan, Eric Chelle has an opportunity to reshape his team, especially the defence, which has been stuck in transition long before his arrival.
With only three center-backs currently in the squad, Nigeria called up Trabzonspor defender Chibuike Nwaiwu as Bassey’s replacement.

Bassey Out Nwaiwu in: The Current Situation
Currently, Bassey and Semi are the mainstays, with Semi stepping up to fill the void left by the retired Troost-Ekong.
Ekong and Semi had been in and out of the team on different occasions in recent years as the central defence evolved.
Similarly, Awaziem returned, a move reminding fans why he lost his position, as the lack of options became glaring.
Bassey’s injury leaves Semi Ajayi as the only senior center-back guaranteed to start, with Igho Ogbu, who featured in Nigeria’s AFCON squad in January, available to provide additional support. Newly invited defender Emmanuel Fernandez is another option on the bench, highlighting the shape Chelle’s new v defence will look like.
The friendly and injury allows Eric Chelle to build a wall that Nigerians can rely on, like the famed Oyinbo Wall.
Fall Of Oyinbo Wall
Since the fall of the Oyinbo Wall, a combination of former captain William Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun, the Super Eagles have been in search of stability.
An accidental invitation of Frederick at the Unity Cup became a masterstroke as the former junior international blossomed into the heart of Nigeria’s defence and fans alike.
A few weeks before the 2025 AFCON, Frederick was out of the team due to injury, which once again highlights the lack of defensive depth.
Now that the puzzle is in place, Eric Chelle has the iron to forge a central defense partnership of his making.
Nigeria Vs Iran
All 22 expected players partook in the team’s first training on Wednesday evening, after confirmation that centre-back Calvin Bassey would not be coming, having pulled out as a result of injury.
The clash with Iran’s Team Melli starts at 4 pm Turkey time (2 pm Nigeria time) on Friday, while the encounter with the Jordan senior men’s team will kick off at 8 pm Turkey time (6 pm Nigeria time) on Tuesday, 31st March.
