When Sport Stops for the Strangest Reasons

Sport is supposed to be about goals, wickets, tries, aces and last-minute winners. But ever so often, something arrives that has absolutely nothing to do with the score, creating a moment when sport stops for something bigger.

A chicken takes the pitch. A parachutist drops from the sky. Hundreds of plastic pigs suddenly appear on a football field. A pigeon is struck by a ball and receives an unexpected helping hand from a defender.

And suddenly, the referee has a problem no tactics board could have prepared for.

Here are some of the most memorable occasions when bizarre interruptions became part of sporting history.

When Sport Stops for the Strangest Reasons

 1. The chicken that invaded Blackburn

It was May 2012 and Blackburn Rovers were fighting for their Premier League survival against Wigan Athletic at Ewood Park.

The stakes could hardly have been higher.

Then, in the middle of the match, a chicken appeared.

Not metaphorically. Not as a nickname for a nervous defender.

An actual chicken was released onto the pitch.

The bizarre protest was aimed at Blackburn’s owners, Venky’s, an Indian company involved in chicken processing. The sight of the bird running around during such a crucial match was surreal enough, but the symbolism was very deliberate.

The interruption did not change Blackburn’s fate. They lost 1-0 and were relegated to the Championship.

Imagine supporting your team in a relegation battle and watching a chicken become one of the most memorable characters of the afternoon.

2. When Sport Stops: Wimbledon gets a little… puzzling

Wimbledon is associated with strawberries, immaculate grass courts and impeccable tradition.

So what could possibly interrupt play?

Jigsaw pieces.

At the 2023 Championships, Just Stop Oil protesters disrupted matches on Court 18 by throwing orange-coloured confetti and pieces from a Wimbledon-themed jigsaw puzzle onto the court.

During the match between Grigor Dimitrov and Sho Shimabukuro, two protesters entered the court. Later that day, another protester disrupted Katie Boulter’s match against Daria Saville.

Play had to stop while officials cleared the debris.

The sight was extraordinary: professional tennis players waiting while tournament staff picked up jigsaw pieces from one of the world’s most famous sporting surfaces.

Wimbledon subsequently stopped selling the particular jigsaw involved in the protest.

It was a reminder that even at Wimbledon, there are some things the umpire simply cannot control.

3. When Sport Stops: When pigs stopped play

If someone told you a football match had been stopped because of pigs, you might reasonably expect an agricultural emergency.

Instead, Charlton Athletic and Coventry City supporters were responsible.

In October 2016, hundreds of plastic pigs were thrown onto the pitch during their League One match at The Valley.

The unusual protest was organised by supporters of both clubs amid anger over their respective ownership situations.

Suddenly, footballers found themselves surrounded by a sea of pink plastic animals.

The referee had no choice but to stop the game while the pitch was cleared.

It was probably the only time in football history when “pigs on the pitch” was a completely literal match report.

 4. Then a man fell from the sky

Now for a pitch invasion with a difference.

Salisbury City were playing Chester in England in 2014 when the game was interrupted by a pitch invader.

But this one had not climbed over a barrier.

He had fallen from approximately 15,000 feet.

The man was taking part in a charity skydive when poor weather forced him to change his intended landing location. He eventually came down on the football pitch at Salisbury’s Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

Players and spectators were understandably stunned.

And what did the parachutist do after landing?

He reportedly went around high-fiving people in the crowd before being escorted away.

Chester defender Danny Higginbotham later described it as the most bizarre thing he had seen on a football pitch.

There are pitch invasions.

And then there are pitch invasions from the sky.

5. A rugby match and a parachutist stuck on the roof

Parachuting did not learn its lesson.

In April 2025, the Champions Cup match between Sale Sharks and Toulouse was delayed before kick-off after a parachutist carrying the match ball went badly off course.

Instead of landing safely on the pitch, he became caught on the roof of Toulouse’s stadium.

Supporters below were moved as a precaution while emergency workers worked out how to rescue him.

The scene became increasingly surreal.

Stadium staff brought out rugby post protectors and even a large inflatable rugby pitch to provide additional cushioning. Eventually, firefighters using a cherry picker freed the parachutist.

He was unharmed.

The match eventually began around 40 minutes late, with Toulouse going on to win 38-15.

The match ball had been delivered.

Just not quite in the conventional manner.

6. The pigeon that became part of the game

Sometimes, the interruption is so small that you wonder how it could possibly stop professional football.

Atletico Madrid’s meeting with Real Sociedad in March 2026 provided the answer.

A pigeon found itself on the pitch and was apparently struck by the ball.

Play was stopped.

Atletico defender Jose Gimenez then picked up the injured bird and carried it away from danger.

The defender later expressed his disbelief at the stoppage, saying he had asked the referee what was happening and was told it was because of the pigeon.

It was an unusual moment even by football’s standards.

Gimenez had already provided an assist in the match. He could perhaps claim another, albeit one involving feathers rather than football boots.

Atletico eventually won 3-2.

The pigeon, meanwhile, became the most unexpected spectator of the afternoon.

7. When Sport Stops: When the bees arrived

Some interruptions are funny.

Others are simply frightening.

During a pre-season tournament match in Tanzania involving City FC Abuja and JKU FC, a swarm of bees descended on the pitch.

Players, officials and even a cameraman reacted by dropping to the ground as the swarm moved across the field. Substitutes sought cover underneath the benches.

For several extraordinary moments, nobody was thinking about football.

They were thinking about bees.

The match eventually resumed once the swarm had dispersed, and City FC Abuja went on to score the winning goal after the interruption.

It was one of those rare sporting situations where the best tactical decision was apparently to lie completely still.
