African Athletics: Lagos To Host Athletics Championship


The Confederation of African Athletics has officially announced Lagos as the host of the 21st African Athletics Championships.

Lagos will host the rest of Africa at the Teslim Balogun Stadium with auxiliary support from National Stadium, Surulere and the Yaba College of Technology, both in Lagos.

The athletics championships will hold from June 23rd-27th, 2021.

Initially set for Algiers, Algeria, the championship could not hol postponed last month.

A statement issued in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday, Kalkaba Malboum, President of the CAA and Sunday Dare, the Nigerian Minister of Youth and Sports Development Reads:

”The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and the Confederation of African Athletics, are fully committed and working in synergy towards the delivery of a world-class Championships.”

Nigeria will be hosting the Championships back to back, after Asaba, Delta State in 2019.

Also, the state will finally be hosting at the second time of asking after failing to do so in 2019.

Furthermore, Lagos will be hosting thirty-two years after hosting the sixth edition of the Senior Athletics Championship.

The championship will serve as the last qualifying event for African athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
