Calvin Bassey: Rohr’s Double-Edge Option For A Problematic Position

44

Calvin Bassey is the latest left-back that super eagles coach will be trying out in a bid to find a permanent solution to a problematic position.

Before Calvin, Rohr met Elderson Echiejile in the left-back position but he was on his way out of the team.

The Franco-German coach then tried other options to fill the void.

Prominent among his experiment is Jamilu Collins, Ola Aina, Tyronne Ebuehi and of late Zaidu Sanusi.

The history of the super eagles left-back position is replete with the conquest of Benedict Iroha, Celestine Babayaro, Ifeanyi Udeze, and Taye Taiwo.
An illustrious position that never lacked top talents for the country until now.

Rohr’s search appears to have ended with Zaidu Sanusi, but the FC Porto man lost form for long periods.

Sanusi’s loss of form and lack of playing time means Rohr’s worry days are back.

Coach Gernot Rohr is happy with the opportunity a player like Calvin Bassey offers for the team beyond just the left-back position.

In a chat with ESPN’s Colin Udoh, Rohr offers his insight on the double-edge options Calvin presents for his team.

“There will be big competition but it is good to know that Bassey can also play central defence. We don’t have any left-footed central defenders, what we have is only five right-footed central defenders.”

Calvin Bassey: SWOT Analysis

Calvin Bassey is very fast and strong on the ball. It is very hard to take the ball off him. He’s also an excellent dribbler and usually charges down the wing.
Sanusi’s absence from the team is an indication that the Bassey would start against Central Africa. His physicality and ability to transit from defense to attack would be vital.
His delivery is a bit poor, and often caught out of position occasionally.

He is not the finished article but, as manager Steven Gerrard put it, once they “polish him up” his potential looks exciting.

Rohr will get the opportunity to tie down a player that can also play for Italy or England.

Super-Eagles first match will hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on Thursday, October 7, while the second fixture will be played four days later in Douala, Cameroon (presently the ‘home’ of the Central African Republic national teams).
