Commonwealth Games: Athletics Hunt for Gold As Weightlifting Deliver More Medals


After yesterday’s medal rush, team Nigeria will again search for more medals across three sports at the commonwealth games.

Here’s a recap of day five and a preview of Day six.

Commonwealth Games: Athletics

Athletics began like a house on fire with a good and bronze in women’s discus. Led by African champion Cici Onyekwere who won gold and Obiageri Amaechi with a Bronze medal.

The 100m Men and women also yielded good fruits that Nigerians hope become a medal.

Favor Ashe, Godson Brume, and African Games champion, Raymond Ekevwo booked a place in the 100m men’s semi-final. Brume will run in Semi-final one, against South Africa’s Akani Simbine Ashe in semi-final two featuring Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, and Raymond in semi-final three.

For the women, Grace Nwokocha led two other ladies Rosemary Chukwuma, and Joy Udo-Gabriel into the women’s Semifinals. Grace won her heat in 11.09 seconds.

From the disappointment of falling at the world athletics championship, Ezekiel Nathaniel now wears a big smile after making the finals of the 400mh with a 50.38 in the semi-final, and he will hope to make an impact in the final.

Still in athletics, Orobosa Anabel Frank will be out in the Shot put Women’s final.

The Gift Of Weightlifting

Elsewhere, Weightlifting is the gift that keeps giving as their medal haul climbed to six at the commonwealth games.

Two golds, one silver and three bronze medals. In the 87kg of the Weightlifting event, Mary Osijo lifted a combined total of 225kg behind Australia’s Eileen Cikamatana and Kristel Ngarlem of Canada.
Earlier in the day, Taiwo Liadi won a silver in a junior championship record total of 216kg in the women’s 76kg final.

Commonwealth Games: Potentials In Boxing

In Boxing, Esther Oshoba qualified for the quarterfinal of the Women’s 54kg-57kg Featherweight division after she defeated Erin Walsh from New Zealand.
Also, Jacinta Umunnakwe beat Mele Ulain in the women’s Over 70kg-75kg (Middleweight) quarter-finals. Later today Adeyinka Benson will hope to out-punch Sam Hickey of Scotland in the Over 71kg-75kg (Middleweight) quarter-finals.
Furthermore, Yetunde Egunjobi will go toe to toe with Savannah Stubley of England in the Over 48kg-50kg (Light Flyweight) quarter-final bout.

Table Tennis Back For More

Meanwhile, in table tennis, Esther Oribamise will be on duty in women’s singles group three with two games scheduled. Esther will take on Sadia MOU and Roana Abel for a chance to progress to the next round. Elsewhere in table tennis, Faith Obazuaye will go up against India’s Baby Ravi in group one of the women’s singles classes 6-10 para-table tennis.
