With Victor Osimhen’s injury potentially ruling him out of the African Cup of Nations in January, the Super Eagles must now search for a replacement.
That shouldn’t be a problem for a nation so blessed with talent in the centre forward position. But the availability of too many options makes it difficult to settle on three strikers.
One of the aforementioned options is David Okereke who has been making waves in the Italian Serie A with Venezia.
24-year old David Okereke has only featured for Nigeria’s u23 team and is well behind in the Super Eagles pecking order.
He spent the last two years with Club Brugge in what a disappointing spell for him. Now on loan at Venezia, Okereke seems to have regained his confidence.
His recent performances in one of Europe’s top five leagues have restored Okereke into contention for a Super Eagles slot.
David Okereke’s Serie A record
David Okereke has played 12 games for newly-promoted Venezia and has scored four goals with one assist. But the notable thing about this is that three of Okereke’s four goals have been winning goals.
Venezia sits 14th on the Serie A log with four wins and 15 points accrued so far. David Okereke won them three of their four wins and nine of the 15 points.
We have here a player with a knack for scoring match-winners, his mentality could prove valuable for the Super Eagles.
What would he bring to the Super Eagles?
David Okereke is a diminutive striker with lots of pace and trickery with a knack for playing on the shoulder of the last defender. He’s 5 foot 9 inches tall which is rather small compared to the current Super Eagles strikers.
But his small stature could help provide something different from the likes of Osimhen, Onuachu, Awoniyi etc who are all giants.
If Okereke is invited to the Super Eagles, the team would finally be able to line up with a proper 4-4-2. David Okereke would flourish while playing around someone like Onuachu, the linkup could be deadly.
