Flourish Sebastine: A Flourishing National Star and Club Career in Limbo.
With a 7-2 aggregate victory over Senegal, the Nigeria national U20team look set to pick a world cup ticket, but while they are celebrating, the scorer of the goals, Flourish Sebastine, is stuck between joy and sadness.
The joy that her five goals are taking Nigeria to the FIFA U20 World cup in Costa Rica.
Sadness that she can’t kick a ball in a competitive game because of a fight over her club future.
For now, Flourish is keeping fit with her youth team, Unnich academy, instead of finetuning her skills in the NWFL.
She has scored seven goals in the qualifying series putting notice on her immense talent.
The talent of Flourish Sebastine working for the national team is also the source of her problematic club career.
Sebastine Flourish: The Club Dilemma
Currently, two clubs, Edo Queens and Bayelsa Queens are fighting over her ownership.
Flourish, a product of Unnich academy was with Edo Queens, but according to sources, the deal didn’t materialize, and she decided to pitch a tent with Bayelsa Queens.
The move didn’t go down well with Edo Queens, as they maintained she is part of their team.
Flourish’s camp has since returned the payments to Edo queens and wants to sort out her future.
In a letter from the NWFL, the claims by Edo Queens got rejected, but the judgement favoured them as they were to make payment to the teen star.
Unfortunately for Edo Queens, Sebastine Flourish’s heart is somewhere else in the NWFL.
She wants to be with Bayelsa Queens, but that is not looking like happening for one of the hottest talents in Nigeria.
Football Connect CEO Amos Joseph believes there are too many loopholes in the claims and an unseen hand.
“It isn’t possible to play for a professional club without a binding contract”. Amos said.
“This is simply the situation between Flourish and Edo Queens. The club has received a notice to cease. I am also surprised at the position of the NWFL on the matter, and it gets me worried. The NFF reckons that the player belongs to Bayelsa Queens, so what are we talking about?
She plays all Falconet games as Bayelsa Queens, yet the NWFL and Edo Queens have continued to block her registration. You cannot force a player to play for your club”.
The Place Of Players Tribunal
Flourish is not alone in this because the poor administrative practices by the Nigerian FA rob off on players.
A player’s status committee usually takes care of issues like these, but the NFF has failed to constitute one for nearly a decade.
Flourish Sebastine’s case is one of the many reasons there should be a football tribunal.
The tribunal should be independent & impartial and will consider the facts and the laws to deliver a fair decision timeously.
A player’s career is time-sensitive.
