MTN Nigeria in partnership with the NFF, Nigerian Football Federation, on Thursday, September 2, 2021, signed a three-year multi-million naira investment in Nigerian football and became the official communications partner of the NFF.
Both parties inked an agreement that is worth N500 million-a-year with several other opportunities.
The NFF/MTN partnership is the first time MTN will be stepping foot into mainstream football sponsorship in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time they will be attempting to join the fray.
MTN Nigeria, represented by Total Promotions in the NPL title sponsorship bid of December 15 and 16 of 2010, emerged winners.
They beat off competition from rivals Globacom in December 2010 to emerge as title sponsors of the NPL.
Also, the deal, worth N2.6 billion for the first year, will attract an annual increase of 10 percent annually.
Meanwhile, the sum of N605 million was set aside by the firm as sponsorship fee for the first year of the contract.
They were to get the naming rights for four years, but the victory did not see the light of day.
What happened next resulted in a two years battle between Total promotions and Nigerian football authorities.
MTN pulled out and seemed to transfer its efforts to grassroots competitions.
The MTN street soccer championship and the football scholar are a few of their efforts.
CEO of MTN, Karl Toriola says his company is also excited to partner with Nigeria Football.
Karl described the NFF/MTN partnership as “a platform to support a force that greatly unifies Nigerians.
