Nigerian super-sub making a case to replace Victor Osimhen in the Super Eagles

It’s no longer news that Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is injured and could possibly miss the upcoming African Cup of Nations. And with several Nigerian strikers plying their trade in European football, there are sufficient options to fill that gap.

One of such options to be considered is Cyriel Dessers who has been in fine form for Dutch club, Feyenoord. The striker has scored seven goals in 16 appearances for Feyenoord since joining on loan from KRC Genk.

But the really impressive part is that Dessers has only started one of those 16 games. All seven of his goals for Feyenoord have been scored off the bench.

What would he add to the Super Eagles?

As earlier mentioned, Cyriel Dessers is a master at impacting football games off the bench, a trait that could prove valuable for Nigeria at AFCON. Imagine having such a deadly weapon waiting to be unleashed when things aren’t going to plan? It would be helpful.

Dessers has a clutch gene that is missing in the Super Eagles, he has a knack for scoring important goals. Four of Dessers’ seven goals have been scored in the 92nd minute or later. Three of those goals have been match-winners, he scored 92nd-minute goals in back to back 1-0 wins over Sparta Rotterdam and AZ Alkmaar. It’s even more impressive that he played a combined 32 minutes in both games.

In the UEFA Conference League, Dessers came off the bench against Union Berlin with the game tied at 1-1. You can already guess where this is going, he scored the winning goal.

Dessers was dropped for the next game against Slavia Prague but again came off the bench to score twice in a 2-2 draw.

That is what Cyriel Dessers would bring to the Super Eagles, a deadly ability to score important goals when needed.

Cyriel Dessers’ ability

Dessers’ possesses superb physical strength, using his robust stature to back into opposing defenders. He has mastered the art of receiving the ball at his feet and turning sharply to bamboozle his marker.

Blessed with a great first touch, Cyriel Dessers often executes delicate flicks and chips to link up with his teammates.

He’s not the quickest but Dessers isn’t slow either, he has a great positional sense which is why he seems to always be in the right place at the right time.

Beyond his clutch ability, Cyriel Dessers might be Nigeria’s most technically-gifted striker, he’s very good on the ball. The only part of his game that needs work is surprisingly his finishing, despite scoring a lot, he’s also missed several gilt-edged chances this season which is probably why he doesn’t start.

However, he’s good enough to be part of Nigeria’s AFCON plans and would be an important addition to the squad.
