Former world footballer of the year, George Weah, is taking a new interest in the growth of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen after the Napoli striker broke his African scoring record in the Serie A.
George Weah: The Goal That Kick Started The Relationship
On Sunday, May 7, the 24-year-old converted a penalty to score Napoli’s lone goal in their 1-0 victory over Fiorentina, giving him 47 Serie A goals overall, one more than Weah’s 46.
The former Liberia international held the record till Osimhen broke it by scoring 46 goals for AC Milan between the 1995–1996 and 1999–2000 seasons.
Osimhen’s achievement was impressive because he did so in fewer games than Weah, scoring 47 goals in 79 appearances than Weah, who held the record with 46 goals in 114 Serie A games.
Since breaking the record, George Weah has taken special interest in speaking about the Nigerian strikerl first congratulating him after the feat.
“With your dedication, humility, commitment and hard work, you can conquer the world”
My heartfelt congratulations to you, Victor Osimhen! I am very glad that you have accomplished a major milestone in your football career, after scoring your 47th goal in the Italian Serie A league.
I watched Played and even predicted your goal against Udinese when your 52nd -minute header won the Scudetto for Napoli. Your movement, your passion, your determination and hunger brought back many memories to me. I wait for your 100th Goals in all competitions in Italy so that you can celebrate (but don’t remove your shirt like I did or you will get a Yellow Card).”
Second Time Is A Charm
The next show of mentorship happened at the stadium in Moronvia where Nigeria played Sierra Leone in an African Nations Cup qualifying game.
Sources at the stadium described George Wah as celebrating and coaching every move of Osimhen during the game.
“Liberia President George Weah was raving about Osimhen all game. He was basically coaching the Napoli striker all through the game from where he sat.”
Victor Osimhen netted a brace in the game against Sierra Leone to send Nigeria through to the 2024 AFCON.
