Onyinyechi Mark set a world and Paralympic record on her way to winning Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paralympic games in Paris.
Mark competed in the women’s up to 61kg Para-Powerlifting category and shattered her previous world record by lifting an astonishing 147kg,
After securing the GOLD medal in women’s up to 61kg Para-Powerlifting, Onyinyechi Mark returned to smash the World Record she had set earlier, to improve on that mark with a new WR of 150kg.
She has set the last three World Records in this event: 146kg, 147kg, and 150kg in one year.
Onyinyechi broke two World Records in 10mins.
Mark’s stunning performance meant she broke the Paralympic Record, previously held by Nigeria’s own Lucy Ejike.
Earlier, Mariam Eniola Bolaji won Team Nigeria’s 1st medal of #Paris2024 #ParalympicGames in the Para-badminton Women’s singles SL3 event.
She beat Kozyna Oksana of Ukraine 21-9, 21-9 in the bronze medal match this morning.
The win brings Nigeria’s total medal haul to one gold, silver, and bronze.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s new national anthem, Nigeria We Hail Thee, officially made a debut on the world stage.
As Mark receives her medal the world listens to the anthem for the first time.
The anthem was initially the Nigeria national anthem from October 1, 1960, to the same date in 1978. It was readopted this year by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
