Hosts Ghana lifted the inaugural WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup on Sunday, defeating Nigeria’s Flamingos 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 2-2.
The thrilling encounter saw Ghana’s Getrude Amoafo open the scoring in the 14th minute, followed by Priscilla Mensah’s goal five minutes later.
However, Nigeria’s Precious Oscar halved the deficit in the 34th minute with a powerful volley, and Harmony Chidi equalized in the 78th minute with a long-range strike.
With the score tied at 2-2, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout.
Ghana’s Maidens scored all five of their spot kicks, while Nigeria’s Flamingos missed one, handing the hosts the victory.
Nigeria’s Taiwo Adegoke missed the crucial penalty, striking the woodwork from six yards.
Despite the loss, the Flamingos showed impressive form throughout the tournament, scoring 16 goals in four matches and conceding only four.
In the third-place match, Benin Republic defeated Cote d’Ivoire in a penalty shootout to claim the bronze medals.
The inaugural WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup was held at the Ghanaian Centre of Excellence in Prampram, outside Accra.
