Standing over six feet five inches, Sultan Agunbiade already possesses a physical presence that sets him apart, yet Sultan is only a boy transitioning to the men’s table tennis because of his immense talent recognized by the African Table Tennis Federation.
Agunbiade earned a spot at the 2026 ITTF Africa Championships in Tangier through a wildcard after an impressive run to the final of the Africa Youth Cup 2026 in Accra, where his performances confirmed his emergence as one of Nigeria’s most promising young talents.

For the teenager, the opportunity is one he has been waiting for.
“It’s a great feeling and a very proud moment for me. Representing my country at senior level is something I’ve always dreamed of, so I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
The talented youngster is enjoying a memorable 2026, starting with the ITTF Africa Youth Championships in Accra, Ghana. He played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s triumph over Egypt in the Under-19 Boys’ Team final.

One of the standout moments of his tournament came in the U-19 boys singles semi-finals, where he defeated two-time African Youth champion Wassim Essid of Tunisia.
The victory propelled him into the final, where he eventually lost to compatriot Matthew Kuti. Nevertheless, his outstanding performances throughout the competition were enough to secure him a coveted wildcard ticket to the senior continental championships in Morocco.

Sultan Agunbiade and A Family Legacy
18-year-old Sultan Agunbiade is stepping into the spotlight of African table tennis with a debut that carries both promise and family legacy.
His father, Tajudeen Agunbiade, a Paralympic medallist and African champion, has been both his coach and one of his most important voices throughout his development.
“He told me to stay humble, stay focused and enjoy the opportunity. He always reminds me that representing the country is a big responsibility and that I should always give my best.”
Nigeria will not compete in the team events in Tangier, but Agunbiade will share the stage with players he grew up watching, including Nigerian stars Quadri Aruna, Olajide Omotayo and Kuti Matthew in the singles and doubles events.
