Nigerian midfielder Deborah Abiodun has signed a three-year deal with the Washington Spirit, the 2021 National Women’s Soccer League champions.
Abiodun, who joins the Spirit from the University of Pittsburgh, had a successful two-year collegiate career with the Panthers, scoring 10 goals and adding three assists in 34 appearances.
Her impressive performances earned her All-ACC honors in both seasons, including Freshman Team and Third Team recognition in 2023 and Second Team accolades in 2024.
Former Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum, who mentored Abiodun during her time with the Nigerian national team, expressed his delight at her success.
“Congratulations Deborah, what a journey this has been for you! Happy to have played a small part,” Waldrum said.
Abiodun represented Nigeria in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the Paris 2024 Olympics.
She becomes the fourth Nigerian to join the NWSL outfit after Josephine Chukwunonye, Francisca Ordega, and Ngozi Okobi.
“I’m beyond thrilled to take this next step in my career by joining Washington Spirit,” said Abiodun. “This isn’t just a dream; it’s a purpose I’ve poured my heart and soul into.”
Abiodun added that she is excited to join a team that prioritizes player growth and development, making the Washington Spirit a perfect fit for her to achieve her goals.
