A late goal from Zimbabwe’s Chirewa put a big dent in Nigeria’s World Cup hopes after a stalemate in Uyo.
Zimbabwe’s Washington Arubi stood between Nigeria and the opening goal in the first half of a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
The first half ended 0-0, with neither of the countries able to find a breakthrough.
Washington Arubi Stands Between Nigeria And Opening Goal
Nigeria started on the ascendancy with Osimhen getting two quick chances to score, but the Arubi was in fine form.
Subsequently, Samuel Chukwueze and Osayi went agonizingly close to getting the first goal for Nigeria, but Arubi and highballs once again stopped Nigeria’s chances.
As the first half wore off, gaps opened up for a Zimbabwe counter as Nwanbali was called to action.
Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, made a substitution that changed the game in the second half.
Tolu Arokodare came in for Chukwueze, and his performance took away attention from Victor Osimhen.
By the 73rd minute, Arokodare’s superb hold up play before sliding a ball to Aina on the left side.
Aina sent in a perfect low cross for Osimhen to connect for Nigeria’s goal.
Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes Hit A Snag
Zimbabwe caught Nigeria’s defense napping as Chirewa sent in a low shot to the corner for an equalizer.
Nigeria moves to third on group C table with 7 points from six games, while Zimbabwe is bottom with four points.
In other Group C games, leader South Africa beat Benin Republic 2-0 away in Abdijan. Similarly, Rwanda and Lesotho finished 1-1.
