Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro will stay on in his role after reaching an agreement with the country’s football federation.
The renewal comes after almost a week of negotiations where the NFF seek to add clauses different from first contract.
From Salary Cut to percentages for NPFL players in future team lists, the NFF put all their cards on the table.
Peseiro Renews Contract: The Targets
As stipulated in the original contract, drawn in May 2022, the Portuguese has been given the mandate to lead the Super Eagles to, at minimum, the semi-finals of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cote d’Ivoire in a few months.
He steered the Super Eagles through the qualifiers and to a ticket with a match to spare, including a 10-0 record international win against Sao Tome and Principe in Agadir, Morocco in June 2022.
Peseiro will stay on and continue in the role after accepting a pay cut on his earlier terms.
The Trade-Offs
The clause for adding NPFL players to future team selections didn’t go down well with the coach.
Sources say Peseiro feels such clause affects his plans to integrate new players into the team.
An example is his inability to call up hot prospects, Gift Orban and Victor Boniface due to limited spots.
Also, the new agreement puts him in charge of the Super Eagles B – the home-based professionals who contest the biennial African Nations Championship.
The acceptance of the additional CHAN role is likely a trade-off for the NPFL slots in team list selection.
Unknown Contract Length From NFF, Sports Ministry Fills the Hole
As Peseiro renews contract, the NFF didn’t reveal the length of the new contract in their official release.
The hole was filed by the press release from the ministry of sports, stating a cut-off date of February, 2024.
The sports ministry’s statement mentioning the length reads-
“Importantly, the meeting agreed to extend the expired contract with the Super Eagles Coach to the end of February,2024”.
