NPFL MD24: Sunshine Stars Compounds Akwa United’s Woes
Two relegation-battling teams Sunshine Stars and Akwa United went to battle to search for survival.
Ovunba spilled a routine save and Sunshine profits to score the match’s only goal.
Mathew Samuel Pokes in the 29th for the only goal of the drab game.
Elsewhere, the encounter between El-Kanemi Warriors FC and Plateau United the Warriors ended 2-0 in Jos.
The turning point came in the 40th minute when Plateau United got a penalty. E. Ihezuo converted the penalty, giving Plateau United the lead.
In the 80th minute, defender Olawale Doyeni elegantly sent in a stunning header, extending Plateau United’s lead to 2-0.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal and the 3SC defence had to do their best to curtail Heartland before caving in the 31st minute when Chukwuma Agor broke the deadlock.
Shooting Stars got a penalty kick nine minutes to the end of the match after Mustapha Adams was fouled in the box and he stepped up to convert the resultant kick, sending goalkeeper Kelvin Ogunga the wrong way.
A few minutes later, referee Emmanuel Kolawole awarded the home team a penalty kick, claiming that a Heartland player was fouled in the box.
However, goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal dived the right way to save John Bassey’s kick but the referee ordered a replay as the 3SC goalie crossed the line.
Bassey made no mistake the second time.
