Nigeria’s Davis Cup team, led by Daniel Adeleye, will battle Morocco in the Davis Cup World Group II playoffs.
To get to the playoffs, Nigeria beat Uzbekistan 3-1 in Lagos to qualify from the World Group III
Morocco will host the tie in September 2026, as they have the choice of ground according to the ITF.
Ranked 48th in the world, Morocco is Africa’s second-best team behind Egypt, while Nigeria ranks 66th, climbing 8 places.
Since our first meeting in 1973, Nigeria has never defeated Morocco in the Davis Cup.
Their dramatic 1-3 loss to Colombia in the World Group I Playoffs is why Morocco is facing Nigeria to determine their stay in the World Group II.
Davis Cup Group II Playoffs: Competition Format
The Davis Cup features over 150 nations competing annually in a tiered format with promotion/relegation across groups, culminating in a Finals event for top teams.
The teams competing in World Group II are the 13 losing nations from the 2026 World Group I Play-offs and the 13 winning nations from the 2026 World Group II Play-offs.
The 13 winning nations will advance to the 2027 World Group I Play-offs. The 13 losing nations will compete in the 2027 World Group II Play-offs.
All ties in the Qualifiers 2nd Round, World Group I and World Group II will be played as best-of-five matches.
The breakdown includes two singles matches on day one, followed by the doubles match, and the two reverse singles matches on day two.
Also, all matches will take the best-of-three tiebreak sets.
Nigeria’s Davis Cup History
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s men’s national team debuted in the Davis Cup in 1974 and has participated regularly, but mainly in the Africa Zone Groups III and IV.
Furthermore, Nigeria reached the Group I semifinals in 1988 and 1989, representing Nigeria’s highest Davis Cup achievement.
