After so much drama around the status of the interim Super Eagles coach, the NFF retains Eguavoen as the Super Eagles’ caretaker coach.
Caretaker manager Austin Eguavoen will remain in charge of Nigeria’s “upcoming fixtures”, including October’s AFCON 2025 qualifiers v Libya,
An excerpt of the statement reads.
“The Executive Committee of Nigeria Football Federation on Thursday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the Federation’s Technical Director, Coach Augustine Eguavoen to continue in his role as Head Coach of the Super Eagles, and lead the team in its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Libya next month.”
This means the NFF retains Eguavoen for the double AFCON qualifying game against Libya.
The 58-year-old, in temporary charge of the squad he had led three times previously, steered the three-time African champions to a 3-0 defeat of Benin Republic and a scoreless draw with Rwanda in Matchdays 1 and 2 earlier this month.

AFCON 2025Q Group D Contenders
Libya has opted to host Group D leaders Nigeria at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium, in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Matchday 4 encounter. The facility is located in Benina, some 19 kilometers outside the country’s second city, Benghazi.
The current NFF board has not secured a permanent coach for the team since the Bruno Labbadia deal fell through.

Libya remains bottom of Group D after two match rounds, following a 1-1 at home to Rwanda (a game that was played at the Tripoli International Stadium) and a 1-2 loss to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in Abidjan.
Nigeria tops the pool with four points, after a 3-0 spanking of Benin Republic in Uyo on Matchday 1 and a scoreless draw with Rwanda’s Amavubi in Kigali on Matchday 2.
