When Sporting Lagos defeated Remo Stars to win the Naija Super 8 preseason tournament in 2023, it marked the beginning of a new South West rivalry. A scintillating tactical battle in Ikenne and a goal fest in Lagos ensured the hype around both games was matched.

Unfortunately, Sporting couldn’t retain their status in the NPFL this season. They became the second Lagos-based team to be relegated in the three seasons since Remo returned to the top flight.

Oga Boys have filled that void for Lagosians and will aim to do better in their first-ever NPFL season. They don’t need to look further than their visitors this week for inspiration on how to navigate these paths.

The Sky Blue Stars have not just stayed up, they’ve become a powerhouse vying for the league year after year. They are a good example of what is achievable with good structure, a benchmark for Ikorodu. However, this week they are rivals, and depending on how this game and the season goes, it could become something big.

Ikorodu City vs. Remo Stars: Remo Stars Put Their Crown To The Test

Remo has been dominant in these regional derbies but they’ve also had tough times in previous games against Lagos teams. They lost three of their six matches against the now-defunct MFM FC. And last season they suffered their joint heaviest defeat in the NPFL when Sporting beat them 4-1 in Onikan.

Onikan is the venue for this weekend’s encounter, a ground Ikorodu City has made a fortress. Since Nurudeen Aweroro’s appointment as interim head coach, the Lagosians have picked maximum points from six home games.

A win for Ikorodu City will close the gap to just two points and could see Remo lose top spot, which adds extra spice to this one. But beyond the points, there is bragging rights and a chance to record a first-ever win in this derby.

Remo Stars lost the league last season because they didn’t get enough points on the road. Sporting Lagos dropped to the NNL because they didn’t win enough games at home. Not much would be decided by this game early in the season but it will definitely be a boost for whoever wins.

Since making their debut in the NPFL, Ikorodu City FC has quickly become one of the league’s most talked-about sides, dominating conversations on social media—whether for banter, hype, or genuine praise. This South West Derby provides yet another stage for them to capture the spotlight, especially given the quality and style of their opponents, Remo Stars.

The players might be new to the top level, but their determination is evident—it’s the same drive that got them promoted from the NNL to the NPFL. Remo Stars: The South West Powerhouse and their dominance.

Ikorodu City will go into this game as the more “in form” team having picked up 10 points from a possible 15 in their last five games. They have also won their only topflight South Western derby, beating Shooting Stars 2-1 less than a month ago. However, it is Remo Stars who have dominated games against teams in the region in recent years.

It wasn’t until earlier this year that Sporting Lagos ended their 12-game unbeaten streak. They would later lose two more derbies on the road to Shooting Stars and Sunshine Stars.

Daniel Ogunmodede’s men have since returned to the status quo, defeating those two already in Ikenne this season. The aim is to continue in that stride or at least not lose when they make the short trip to Lagos.

Avoiding defeat in this game will be crucial not just for the title race but in the likelihood that Nigeria drops out of the top 12 of CAF’s 5-year Associations ranking, a plot that is looking very likely right now. Remo Stars have played on the continent in each of the last three seasons. They are the only South Western team to do so since MFM in 2017.
