Ademola Lookman Is CAF Africa’s Best Player, Earns Nigeria’s Third Back-To-Back Win

Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman is Africa’s best player holding off competition from Morroco’s Hakimi, Ivorian star Adingra. and two others at the CAF 2024 African Footballer of the Year Awards in Marrakesh.

Ademola Lookman succeeded Victor Osimhen’s 2023 win to give Nigeria a third back-to-back CAF Best Player Award victory.

The 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco was a celebration of African excellence and to honor those who have enriched the game on the continent over the past year.

The ceremony took place at the Palais des Congrès.

Nigeria’s Historical Back-To-Back Win

In 1993, Rashidi Yekini won the award before Emmanuel Amuneke retained it in 1994.

Subsequently, in 1996, Kanu Nwankwo was Africa’s best, and by 1997, it. was Victor Ikpeba’s turn to win it.

After failing to win. a CAF award in 27 years, Victor Osimhne won the award in 2023 and now, Ademola Lookman is making it a third back-to-back victory for Nigeria.

Ademola Lookman Is CAF Africa’s Best: A Year To Remember

Lookman played a key role in helping his Italian club, Atalanta win the first European trophy in their history.

A memorable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen – making him the sixth player to score a treble in a European club final and the first since 1975.

Earlier, Lookman led Nigeria to second place, scoring three goals before making the team of the tournament at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in February.

Also, the former England junior international was the only African on this year’s men’s Ballon d’Or shortlist, finishing 14th.

Furthermore, Lookman has again proved instrumental for Atalanta this season, scoring eight goals to help his team go top in Serie A.

The winners are voted for by a panel of experts which includes members of Caf’s technical committee plus African media professionals, players, and coaches.
