Chelle’s World Cup Qualifier Squad: Question On Selections
The first list had only one right-back, and now, Chelle is replacing A left-back to replace the only right-back called up.
Also, four midfielders, nine attackers made the list for the Super Eagles team, ahead of games against Lesotho and the Benin Republic this month.
The selection creates more questions for a team that has yet to score more than two goals in a game.
Furthermore, the Attack/Midfield imbalance reflects the team’s struggles to create and convert chances.
A Lifeline Still Out Of Hand
Currently sitting third in Group C with 11 points from eight games, the Super Eagles trail behind Benin Republic and South Africa, both on 14 points.
However, FIFA’s recent decision to dock South Africa three points has reshaped the standings and tightened the race.
Rwanda is also level with Nigeria on 11 points, making the group one of the most competitive in Africa. To book a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria must win its remaining two fixtures and hope for favourable results elsewhere, specifically a Rwanda win over Benin Republic and Zimbabwe holding South Africa.
With the pressure mounting, Chelle and his players know they must deliver performances that restore belief and keep the World Cup dream alive for millions of Nigerians.
