The race produced a series of outstanding performances, with four athletes recording personal bests in the final.
Fakorede Nicholas Adekalu of Mississippi State University also dipped under his previous best, clocking 9.98s for the first time in his career to finish second.
Chidera Ezeakor of Team Customs continued his remarkable rise in the sprint ranks, placing third in another personal best time of 10.03 seconds.
Teenage sensation Tejiri Godwin, representing Bayelsa State, showed immense promise by finishing fourth in a personal best 10.20 seconds, while former national champion Enoch Adegoke crossed the line in fifth position with a time of 10.27 seconds.
Where Ashe’s Performance Ranks In Nigerian Sprinting History
Ashe’s performance makes him the fastest Nigerian man ever on home soil, leading a historic race with Nicholas Fakorede finishing 2nd in a PB of 9.98s.
Together, Ashe and Fakorede became the first Nigerian duo to break 10 seconds in the same race since 2003, when Deji Aliu and Uchenna Emedolu achieved the feat in Abuja.
“Last month, I was putting in the work; anyone who came to Yabatech would see me putting in the work. I was the last man to run a sub-10s in Nigeria (2022), and I’ve done it again. History is meant to be broken. Let us keep breaking history.”
The First Sub-10 That Helped Ashe Claim 100m Title
In the semi-finals, Favour Ashe dropped a wind-aided 9.97s (2.3) to win the first semifinal of the men’s 100m at the Commonwealth Games Trials.
He eased through, finishing ahead of Gafar Audu, who ran 10.28s, and Chibueze Osama in 10.36s.
It became the first sub-10 (all-conditions) on Nigerian soil since 2022, when he ran 9.99s to win the national title.
