Success Ogunjobi hits a solid forehand winner to ensure Nigeria completes a 2-1 win against Burundi in the first game of the ongoing Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III Qualifier in Botswana.
Success partnered Oyinlomo Quadre to win Nigeria’s third rubber of the tie, taking Team Nigeria to a 2-1 victory.
Previously, Khadijat Mohammed gave Nigeria a 1-0 lead against Burundi in the opening rubber at the Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III Qualifier.
Nigeria’s number one female tennis player, Khadijat, comfortably won the first set 6-0. Khadijat Mohammed rounded up the tie with a 6-2 win in the second set.
Burundi fought back with a win, taking the tie to the final rubber.
The Burundian took the first set 6-3, but went a break down in the second set as Success broke for the first time in the match.
Eventually, Ange Ishimwe from Burundi took out Nigeria’s Success Ogunjobi 6-3, 6-3 in the second rubber, leaving Nigeria to strive for a win in the third rubber – a doubles match-up.
In the final rubber, Oyinlomo Quadre teamed up with Success Ogunjobi for the doubles and final rubber.
The duo took an early break to earn a 3-1 lead. Eventually, they got the first set in the locker room with an emphatic 6-1 win.
A forehand winner from Success Ogunjobi ensured the duo earned a flawless second set, 6-0, to complete Nigeria’s win.
The Nigerian team is competing against ten other countries for the coveted promotion to the next group, while the bottom teams will be relegated.
Algeria, Botswana, Burundi, Kenya, Ghana, Tunisia, Madagascar, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Cameroon will be seeking to gain promotion from the regional group.
