Nigeria’s Super Falcons continue to prepare for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as they aim to defend their title. The 10-time winner, a historic feat not just for the country but for Africa, reached day 7 of intensive camping ahead of the tournament.
In our earlier report, Sports Intel had announced the arrival of key members of the squad, including captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Asisat Oshoala and other invited players. Since then, newbie Rofiat Imuran and veteran Francisca Ordega have joined the preparations, bringing the number to 15 players. Fans’ favourite, Michelle Alozie, Jennifer Echegini and some other players are yet to arrive to make it a full roster.
Cancelled Friendly
The inadequate number of players in camp led to the cancellation of a preparatory match against the Black Queens of Ghana. The game scheduled for Saturday, 18th July couldn’t hold. The Super Falcons had announced the fixture via their official X handle, giving details of the supposed game.
Eventually, the night before the fixture, the NFF made an announcement cancelling the game via the official X handle. The post read:
“The friendly match between the Super Falcons and the Black Queens planned for Saturday, 18 July 2026 in Casablanca is off, due to unforeseen circumstances.”
With the Ghana fixture canceled, the team now has 9 days to be super ready for their opening fixture clash with Malawi set for the 28th July. No one is certain if the Nigeria Football Federation will secure another friendly game for the team before the WAFCON kicks off.
Before this canceled friendly match against Ghana, the Super Falcons had only played one friendly game in 2026 against the Taranga Lioness of Senegal in a double-header friendly game played in Nigeria. With about 9 players still to arrive camp, it is not certain if a friendly game will be played to prepare the team for the tournament.
The Super Falcons face Malawi, Egypt and Zambia in Group C as they try to not only defend their title but also seal qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup coming up in Brazil.
